About this document

An authority letter lets another person handle a specific, limited task for you, such as collecting a document, paying a bill or submitting an application at an office. It is not a power of attorney.

It cannot be used to sell, transfer or mortgage a property, or to sign a registered document. Those need a registered power of attorney. This generator builds the letter in your browser and nothing you type is stored on our server.

Who signs: The person giving authority (signs) and the person authorised (specimen signature).

Before you sign

  1. Ask the office what format and documents it accepts. Some insist on their own form or a notarised letter.
  2. Keep the task narrow and the dates short.

After you print

  1. Attach copies of both IDs. The person authorised carries the originals.
  2. For selling, transferring or registering a property, use a registered power of attorney instead.

Frequently asked questions

Is an authority letter the same as a power of attorney?

No. An authority letter covers a small, specific task. A power of attorney is a formal legal document, and for property transfers it generally has to be stamped and registered. This letter cannot be used to sell a property.

Does it need to be notarised?

That depends on the office. Ask before you print.
